1. Familiarize yourself with the text, paying special attention to the portion reserved for this course, pp. 855-1858. Please note the sections at the back of your text, "British Money," "The British Baronage," "Religions in England," and especially "Poetic Forms and Literary Terminology," pp. 2828-2854. Refer to these as necessary throughout the semester.

2. Read with special care the introduction to the Neoclassical Period, "The Restoration and the Eighteenth Century," pp. 855-876. This introduction is replete with information that will make the literature you read more comprehensible.

3. Read the section in our text on William Hogarth and view the sequence of prints entitled "Marriage A-La-Mode," pp. 1188-1195, by way of preparation for your comment on the Discussion Forum. Also read my comments below on Hogarth. Unfortunately, the prints in our text have lost much of their detail in the printing. You may therefore substitute prints that you find on a Web site if you wish. See especially the site referenced in the first discussion.
