Insulators

Other elements offer high resistance to electrical current passing through them. These elements are known as insulators.

  • Insulators have five to eight electrons in their valance ring (outer orbit).

Examples of insulators are: glass, wood, most plastics and rubber, air, and pure water. Insulators will still allow current to pass through them, however it takes a great amount of electromotive force to cause this to happen. For example, lightning is electrical current through the air.
