Ions
If an atom loses or gains electrons, the electrical balance will be upset and the atom becomes an ion.
- A positive ion is an atom that has lost an electron or electrons. In this state, there are more protons with their positive electrical charge than there are electrons with their negative electrical charge.
- A negative ion is an atom that has gained one or more electrons. In this state, there are less protons with their positive electrical charge than there are electrons with their negative electrical charge.

REMEMBER: The rules of attraction and repulsion apply to positive and negative ions also.
