Range Button
The Fluke 87 is an automatic ranging meter. This means the meter will automatically pick the best range for the most accurate readings. Typically you would want to always use the Auto mode. The only exception is if you are measuring something that is on the edge of two ranges, the meter might switch back and forth between the two ranges causing the display to be unreadable. To manually change the range of the meter, press the Range button. The range currently being used is displayed in the lower right hand side of the meter's screen.
There are 4 ranges: 4, 40, 400, and 4000. Although there is a 4000 Volt range on the Fluke 87, the maximum voltage the meter can safely handle is 1000 volts.
Note: The new Fluke 87-V has higher ranges: 6, 60, 600, and 1000
