What Else Can I Do?

Stress Management Course Files

Answer each of the following questions first in your word processor. When you are finished, be sure to save your work. Then copy it and paste it all into the appropriate box below. This activity has several parts to it. Do not leave any of the parts undone. It is better to do a bit more than a bit less than you think is necessary. That way I can be pretty sure you have read through the chapter and understand it pretty well.

Please base your responses to the questions below on chapters 15 & 24 of your textbook:

From this chapter's reading respond to the following questions. Make sure you have answered them sufficiently enough to demonstrate that you have thoroughly read and understand the principles in the chapters. 

The first set of questions are treated in chapter 15.

  • Explain why exercise is so very valuable for us from a stress management perspective. In other words, besides all the wonderful benefits of regular exercise, why is it probably the most important thing we can do to help turn off the stress response.
  • If there were one thing in your diet that you could change to help you feel better in general, based on the information in this chapter, what would it be?
  • Looking at the suggestions for improving sleep, relate a few things you could immediately do, or not do anymore, to help you sleep better at night.

These questions are treated in chapter 24:

  • Explain why you think Becoming Like a Little Child is a useful way to prevent stress.
  • What is some preventive maintenance you could do that would help you prevent some of your stress?
  • What is the most enjoyable thing you can think of doing? When was the last time you did it? What can you do with your schedule so you can do that thing more often?
  • Describe the difference between a need and a preference. What do you find yourself needing when in reality it is a want that you don't necessarily have to have.
  • What is one thing in your life that, if you simplified, you would find yourself experiencing less stress?
  • Several methods were described in the text for getting rid of surface tension: Write, scream, cry, talk it over with someone. Think of a time that you used one of these to help you release the energy. Explain the situation and why you think you felt better afterward.
  • Reading through the section on forgiveness, explain why this is such a powerful way to reduce stress.
  • According to the research on naps, the ideal length for a nap appears to be how long? Explain why this appears to be the case?
  • Why do you think service is a useful way to reduce stress?
  • Explain why it is so important to keep agreements in relation to stress reduction.
  • Is there anything in the "What Not to Do" section that you currently do that, if you eliminated would go a long way toward helping you reduce stress? Explain why you think so.
  • Finish your discussion with your thoughts of how this information affects you personally including any insights you had about yourself and the stress that you experience.
