Using Crossword Puzzles in your Online Classes (Windows machines only)

 

1)    Installation

a.     Go to http://www.eclipsecrossword.com and select the ‘Download’ tab at the top of the page.

b.     Select the link labeled: “I'm downloading EclipseCrossword for the first time”

c.      Select the ‘Download EclipseCrossword’ button, and ‘save’ or ‘run’ the file.

d.      Go through the installation process.

2)    Run the program

a.     Start, All Programs, EclipseCrossword.

b.     Select the radio button to ‘Start a new crossword’ – select next.

c.      Select the radio button ‘Let me create a word from scratch’.

d.     For each word in the puzzle:

               i.      Enter the word

               ii.      Provide a clue

               iii.      Select ‘add to word list’

e.     Once all your words have been added, select ‘next’.

               i.      You will be prompted to save your word list.

               ii.      Choose a location. The file will be appended with .ewl.

               iii.      Provide a name for the puzzle, the author’s name and other identifying information you want.

f.       Select ‘Next.

               i.      Determine the dimensions for your puzzle, select next.

               ii.      Either keep the puzzle as designed or select ‘make another puzzle like this one’.

               iii.      Repeat ii until you are satisfied with the ‘look’ of your puzzle.

               iv.      Select next.

g.     Save or print options.

                i.      Choose the format you want for your puzzle.

                ii.      To publish within Vista, select the tab ‘Save as a web page’.

                           1.     Select “Interactive with Javascript’.

                           2.     Try out your puzzle!

h.     To upload the puzzle to your course: use the ‘add file’ tool within your course; locate and upload the .html file.

i.        To create the puzzle as an assignment that can be turned in:

                 i.      Follow same steps to create puzzle; at ‘Save as Web Page’:

                          1.     Select Printable Web Pages, Empty Grid and Clues.

                          2.     Upload the file to the course.

                          3.     Ask students to enter answers into a word doc and upload.
