Open Course Ware

OpenCourseWare (OCW) is an educational movement that is quickly spreading across the world. It is an effort to make educational resources free and open to faculty, students and self-learners around the world, via the web. The OpenCourseWare approach works in harmony with national and international copyright law to allow authors to retain copyright to their intellectual property while giving users permission to use, adapt, and redistribute their teaching materials for non-commercial purposes. There are over 50 universities worldwide offering OpenCourseWare programs.

This is the basic premise behind OCW: As human beings we are given the capacity to learn, improve, and progress, and educational opportunities are the primary means through which we realize this capacity. When educational materials can be electronically duplicated and transferred around the world at little cost, we have a greater ethical obligation than ever before to share these materials with those in need.

In addition to the altruist reasons for participating in OCW, there are many additional benefits.
